Unit 04: Practical Applications Of Participatory Democracy And Governance

Unit 4 examines practical applications of ‘deepening democracy’. Five case studies are drawn upon from across the globe, featuring a variety of initiatives aimed at fostering people-centered governance processes. These initiatives are examined through a critical lens, to further our understanding of which processes are most effective in fostering participatory forms of citizenship.

After completing this unit, you should be familiar with the following concepts and issues:

• The practice of ‘deepening democracy’ in a wide variety of different cultural and institutional contexts across the Globe; and
• The main features, strengths and weaknesses of each approach.
