Unit 02: Claiming Citizenship: Influences And Practices

Unit 2 provides an overview of the role played by the State, Market and Civil Society in shaping the practice of citizenship. It introduces the theory of power, space and Civil Society intermediation as three main factors influencing the claiming of citizenship and rights, and applies these using case studies from across the world.

Upon completion of this Unit, you should be familiar with the following concepts and issues.

  • Role of State, Market and Civil Society in determining what citizenship means and how it can be achieved;
  • Power, space and intermediation influencing the abilities of citizens to claim and achieve their rights;
  • Ways in which citizenship is claimed and practiced through practical examples from South and Central America, Asia and Africa.
