PEM Module 01

Introduction

Conventional methods of enumeration and mapping tend to reduce real people into mere numerical values. Further, they fail to provide insights into the lives and conditions of the urban poor. The objectives of this module are to understand:

  • Methodologies and practices in the enumeration and mapping process carried out in the communities
  • Methods of data collection
  • Ways  to facilitate, empower, encourage and sustain the community’s interests

This module also explores processes within which the poor, marginalized and vulnerable can effectively use and  negotiate with knowledge given to them The focus in on eliciting the participation  of people in order  that

  • Their existence is validated
  • Illustrates their lives
  • Challenges views of their non-contribution to economic processes
  • Puts them squarely on the site map of development processes
  • Enhances the richness and therefore the efficacy of data collected

Thus, enumeration and mapping become political processes that democratize the procedure of development in securing basic services and improving the lives of the entire community.
