Learn from you

Dear Martha Madam

It’s a big privilege for me to get the opportunity of asking something focusing on Gender issues to an expert like you! I will be very happy if you kindly give some idea about below issues -

  • In general, engendering a method is depends on researcher’s interaction skill; but is there are any preferred method/methods in PR that can be use to ease rural women to collect authentic data from them?
  • In research findings/knowledge dissemination process, which process are more rural women friendly?
  • What will be the appropriate data collection method when we will go for a research like “causes of women’s less participation in Politics at the Village of XXX”? And how we triangulate the findings?
  • Please mention some of famous women participatory researcher name and their country, preferred in Asia context?
  • And finally, at my working place I asked to provide feedback on different reports like – baseline, Midterm review, TOR, Inception report, research paper, annual report from the perspective of PR and Gender both? Is there any short tools (like 10-120 indicators) that can be used to analyze any report either it is gender friendly or followed PR methods rightly?

Thanking in advance for your cooperation. Hope your knowledge window will be always open for us in future also.

Best regards

Masud

Dear Masud

Good to hear from you and I am delighted that you are taking the gender issue very seriously. Let me try and respond to your queries:

  1. When collecting data and disseminating information from rural women (and men) it is vital to know whether or not they have any literacy skills.  If they do not then choosing the appropriate methodology to both interest them in the issue that is under consideration and collect data is important. Therefore any tool which does not require reading or writing has to be considered. These may include but are not limited to:
  • Focused and small group discussions
  • Role plays
  • Use of graphs/charts and other data can be used for dissemination where the participant can understand the information without any reading skill. PPTs may also be use
  • Use of videos other forms of presentation with or without voiceovers

The key pointer to remember here is that one can use any kind of methodology, including voting machines etc. provided that the participant is comfortable with the same, she/he has control over the tool and understands that her/his response is going towards building up a body of knowledge that will be used to their advantage or for common good.

  1. FGDs and small group discussion are goods of understanding the causes of low participation women in village level politics. Findings of these discussions can be compared to similar discussions held with men and other members of the community. For example if low levels of education is one of the stated reasons for low participation, this may be validated from records of educational levels of women in the village/district and even the province to establish the depth and impact of illiteracy.  Low levels of confidence and the fact that women have no contribution to economic and social processes may be triangulated from data on number of women in the workforce, participation of women in social processes, crimes against women (dowry, trafficking, kidnapping etc) to draw linkages and validate data.
  2. Some well-known female researcher (participatory research) Ms. Chan Lean Heng from Malaysia. You can Google her for further details.
  3. Lastly I have attached a short note which gives checklists and information on baseline/mid-term reports etc. Please go through the same for your reference.

Hope that this answers your queries.

 Warm regards

Martha

Thanks for the clarity, I already download and read the document; all the checklist will be very useful for me to review the design and implementation of a  project from engendering point of view.

Thanks once again.
