Dear learners,

We begin our unit 2 now and in this unit we shall we exploring roots of gender discrimination. Upon completion of this unit, you should be able to:

•Comprehend different aspects of gender stereotypes;
•Unpack the socialisation process; and
•Understand patriarchy.

Lets start this unit with a discussion of this picture. This was an advertisement in a magazine that I saw when I was in Sri Lanka last month. What are your thoughts on it.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Heloo to all

I think this shows difference in thoughts of male and female.

Male takes enjoyment as important part of his life and believes in face value of a women.

Where as female believes in internal value as if we see this pic lion what I feel is not so good looking as lioness, but has has power and strength which makes him king.

lets see what other can tell about it....

Dear Martha and Nandita,

Thanks for starting the Unit 2. I think this advertisement is based on the typical men mentality, which treat women as “commodities”. This kind of thinking is highly disregardful for women and is also one of the main reasons for violence against women including sexual violence.

Best regards,

Amit

Thank you for this questioning and I’m sorry for delay response. I think this advertisement is a real picture of the mindset of a man. They not seeing women as subject to be respected, but the object/property/commodities to be enjoyed for pleasure or to be taken advantage and have to not respected. in our culture, education specially to young man in family they are not taught to respect women even they born from a woman. But woman taught to respect man, served, more than their respect & serve them self. This is what makes men feel more superior and woman being subordinate.
