Unit 3 (CSB)

Unit 3: Civil Society and Development

Development is an interesting term since it could mean different things to different people. Consequently, different groups of people assume different roles that civil society has in development processes.
The Unit looks into various interventions undertaken by CSOs in development in India and the South Asian region. As a result of such interventions, there is also increased clarity on what are the various challenges and issues that are emerging and how they can be tackled.
After completing this Unit, you will be familiar with the following:

  • What development means and how its understanding has evolved historically
  • What participatory and related approaches of development mean
  • How Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) are involved in various aspects and forms of development
  • The issues and challenges involved in development work by CSOs, currently and in the future
