Unit 06 : Participatory Research Tools in Development Practice

Participatory methods have been used in many fields like enumeration and mapping. This is illustrated through the case of the slum dwellers of Mumbai. Such studies have further initiated participatory methods to be utilised in town planning and other practices.

Participatory methods have also been used in conflict resolution. The example of how people’s theatre was used to resolve religio-ethnic disturbances in Northern Nigeria proves useful in this context.

Participatory methods have also been used to initiate dialogues between the people and the concerned authorities like in the case of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Here, participatory videos were used as the medium to initiate debates between slum dwellers and the municipality.

The objectives of this Unit are to:

Understand various PR tools used in development practice.
