Unit 1: A Conceptual Understanding of Monitoring and Evaluation

This unit will provide you with the three basic concepts of planning, monitoring and evaluation that are the foundations of this course. First, we will define the concepts, understanding the meanings of planning, monitoring and evaluation and the distinction between these concepts.The origins, principles and key features of participatory approaches to monitoring and evaluation will be discussed and illustrated through cases studies. . The differences between participatory and conventional approaches to monitoring and evaluation will be established, as well as, the drawbacks faced in conventional methods of monitoring and evaluation in the context of community participation and ownership of the process. 

On completion of the Unit, you would be familiar with:

  • The meanings of monitoring and evaluation, and how they relate to the processes of planning
  • Why monitoring and evaluation are important, and what benefits flow from their use
  • The differences between conventional and participatory approaches to monitoring and evaluation

The importance of participation and the diverse contexts in which monitoring and evaluation are carried out
